Metal cutting band saw equipment requires a lubricant/coolant to consistently cut through metal. The coolant is pumped continuously over the blade where it contacts the metal to be cut. This coolant cools the blade and the work piece for a better edge and Double Column band Saw extended blade life. The saw blade rotates at a constant rate. Different blades are used for different metals, employing different speed rates. Many saws include a system to remove chips from the cutting path. The most common Industrial band saws are horizontal band saws. This style has the blade rotating in parallel (horizontally) with the work table and metal to be cut. Models are offered in various blade sizes and speeds for different applications. Smaller saw have gravity drop saw blades, other larger and more automated machines have power assisted blade drop and lifters.
Common to almost all saws are clamps for the work piece and stops, to control length of cut. In automated equipment the metal to be cut will automatically be fed, clamped and then cut to length.
Styles of horizontal band saw equipment are pivot head, single column and double column. In a pivot head the head is lifted from one side and pivot up from a fixed point on the opposing end. Double columns use two parallel columns to drop the blade evenly down onto the work piece. It is the preferred style in industrial machine shops.
